Abstract
The Internet and Web have seen tremendous growth throughout the past three decades. As a result of this growth, online services---such as search engines and news websites---can no longer meet the increasing demands of their users with the power of a single computer, or even a small cluster of computers. Instead, these services harness the computing power of hundreds of thousands of machines worldwide. Managing distributed systems that run on computers spread around the world introduces many challenges including application configuration, failure detection, and synchronization. In this talk, I will discuss how we address these challenges in the design of Gush, a distributed application control infrastructure that aims to simplify the management of distributed applications running on machines across the world.
Lunch will be provided at noon.
