Since 1970 the Computer Science faculty at Union College has prided itself in educating skilled computer science graduates who pursue careers as computer scientists, computer engineers, information system administrators, and managers.

The Computer Science department offers:

• a B.S. degree in Computer Science
• a B.S. in Computer Engineering (jointly with Electrical Engineering)
• a minor in Computer Science

The common goals of these programs are to provide students with fundamental knowledge of the major fields of computer science and with the experience that they need to use computers as effective tools. They pursue these goals within the Union framework of liberal education, which provides the global perspective that is crucial for success in an increasingly networked world. The departmental and college-wide programs prepare our graduates to continue to pursue their education throughout their lives.

The programs in the department offer both breadth and depth:

• They introduce students to computers as general problem-solving tools that extend the scope of human achievement.
• They provide an understanding of how a variety of computers function: personal computers, networked workstations, and the special-purpose microprocessors that are common parts of complex systems today. This study looks at both hardware and software design, and at their interaction.
• They provide the resources that enable students to continue their education beyond the four years of college: the study of algorithms, of a variety of programming languages, and of the design skills that are required to build computer programs.
• Through group projects in courses, through study abroad and co-op work, and through the senior project, which may be interdisciplinary, students gain experience in communication and in cooperative teamwork.
